The Wildflower Capital Initiative (WCI) is part of a state-wide initiative (Wildflower WA) initiated by Main Roads WA to enhance the community and tourist experience of WA with a ‘Wildflower theme’ in the design and character of public spaces, built form and major infrastructure.
Following completion of construction of the Gateway WA works, the scope of a possible legacy landscape package to help establish and reinforce a ‘Wildflower Way’ was commissioned by Leightons, the Gateway WA contractor.
This landscape assessment and concept report fed into subsequent planning and design of WCI works, the first stages of which are now under construction by Main Roads
In 2017, landscape planning, design and construction was undertaken in the first stage of a multi year programme to establish memorable road journeys connecting with the Perth CBD.
Feature sites and major attractions around the city have been identified which provide opportunities to showcase the unique and diverse flora of Western Australia.
WCI journeys will be reinforced with urban design interventions including, art, interpretive design and architecture, through the exploration of colour, form, light and texture.
In the first year, landscape design and construction was carried out along the Graham Farmer Freeway near the Stadium and at the Causeway.
Landscape treatments include hard and soft landscape elements and utilise long flowering native species.
